Google Cloud Platform Cross Org Billing

In some circumstances you may wish to use the same billing account across multiple GCP organizations; eg. for multi-tenant sub-domains of a SaaS offering.

The billing account is associated with an org, so while you can’t directly link it to multiple orgs, you can associate it with projects within a different org by linking it with the user within that org who creates the projects.

From GCP’s Overview of Billing Access Control, which is is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License.

The following steps describe the process.

From the org with the billing account’s Manage billing accounts screen, grant billing user permission to a user in another org (or an unmanaged user in the case of Cloud Identity signup bootstrapping).

Create a new project in the second org; the billing account from the first org should be available as a linked billing account

You may get a warning on project creation; ignore this:

If you look under the organization, you will see that the new project has been created

…and if you look at the project’s billing settings, you will see that it has the billing account from the other org.
